Russia says tank deliveries to Ukraine "direct involvement" by West in conflict

Russia said on Thursday that the promised deliveries of Western tanks to Ukraine was seen as direct and growing involvement by the U.S. and Europe in the conflict.

The Kremlin was reacting for the first time to announcements by the U.S. and Germany on Wednesday that they would arm Ukraine with dozens of battle tanks in its fight against Russia.

"We categorically disagree with this, and in Moscow, everything that the alliance and the capitals I mentioned are doing is seen as direct involvement in the conflict," spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.

But those in Moscow appeared to mock the announcement by Western countries, with one man saying they could use "scrap metal" from tanks to purchase other things in Russia.

Analyst Ed Arnold, however, said Thursday that whether Leopard 2 or M1 Abrams or other Western-made tanks, using them would "overmatch on Russian capabilities in terms of their firepower and certainly protection."
