Experts are concerned that despite the availability of a respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine for older Canadians, many may be deterred from receiving it due to the out-of-pocket cost. This could potentially result in preventable hospitalizations and even deaths during the cold and flu season.
RSV is a highly contagious respiratory virus that can be particularly severe for young children and older adults. The virus tends to surge in late fall and persists until spring. Proper access to vaccination and increased public awareness about the virus may help to reduce its spread, according to a report published on Wednesday by the National Institute on Aging (NIA).
“RSV is actually a very common virus. Whenever we have cold and flu season, it’s one of the main causes why people end up in hospital, and it causes a significant number of deaths every year,” warned Dr. Samir Sinha, co-author of the report and director of geriatrics at Sinai Health and the University Health Network in Toronto.
The vaccine is now being made available across the country, but it is not publicly funded in most provinces and most older Canadians may have to pay out of pocket for it. Global's Katherine Ward has the details.
