Exactly one year after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the ruling that had legalized abortion nationwide, pro-choice advocates took to the streets of Washington, D.C. in protest.
The Roe v. Wade ruling guaranteed the constitution right to safe abortions across the U.S. back in 1973 — nearly 50 years ago.
It was overturned in a 5-4 decision on June 24, 2022, granting a significant victory to religious conservatives. Simultaneously, it created a harrowing new reality for American women, putting their reproductive health at severe risk.
Though 15 states have passed legislation to completely restrict the procedure, abortion is still legal, in some form, across 35. An upcoming Republican-backed law, however, kicks in on July 1, cutting the legal window for North Carolina women to have abortions from 20 to a mere 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Addressing the matter on Saturday, Vice President Kamala Harris urged women across the U.S. to “advance the promise of freedom” once again.
