Sgt. David Lee with the RCMP Integrated Homicide Investigation Team provided an update on the shooting of Ripudaman Singh Malik, the man acquitted in the 1985 Air India bombings. He said the motive was still being determined but it was believed to be a "targeted" shooting.
Lee also advised a white Honda CRV, believed to be connected to the shooting, was found burned in the area of 82nd Avenue and 122A Street. He said police were looking for witnesses and dashcam footage of a white Honda CRV in connection with the fatal shooting of Malik.
Police were called to the Newton neighbourhood over reports of gunfire. They arrived to find a man who had been shot and later died from his injuries.
Lee responded Friday to reports that it took some time for Malik to receive treatment, saying police responded right away and first responders already started to provide emergency intervention.
He also said it was a business area where the shooting took place and there was risk "at the time," but there is no further risk to the public.
Malik and Ajaib Singh Bagri were acquitted in 2005 of mass murder and conspiracy charges related to the pair of Air India bombings that killed 331 people, mostly from the Toronto and Vancouver areas.
The Lower Mainland's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said Thursday it had yet to determine a motive in Malik's killing, but that "the shooting appears targeted," which Lee repeated on Friday.
