Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans powered past a Democratic boycott Thursday to advance Amy Coney Barrett’s Supreme Court nomination to the full Senate, keeping U.S. President Donald Trump’s pick on track for confirmation before Election Day.
Instead of attending, Democratic senators filled their seats with images of people they say would lose health care coverage if the Affordable Care Act is overturned -- a key case coming before the Supreme Court next month.
Never has the Senate confirmed a Supreme Court nominee so close to a presidential election.
Judiciary Committee Chair, Sen. Lindsey Graham, told his colleagues that Thursday’s vote would go forward, with or without the Democratic senators.
“Our Democratic colleagues informed the committee last night that they will not participate in the hearing. That was their choice,” he said, adding, “It will be my choice to vote the nominee out of committee. We are not going to allow them to take over the committee.”
Barrett’s ascent to the high court would lock a 6-3 conservative majority on the court for the foreseeable future.
