The bacteria known as Vibrio vulnificus is typically found in warm climates like the Gulf Coast.
Scientists said in a study that the bacteria has been slowly spreading north over the last 30 years.
“So between 1988 and 2018, and every year it was moving northwards at a rate of about 48 kilometres,” says researcher Elizabeth Archer.
Infection in humans by the bacteria could double in the United States within the next 20 years, and even reach Canada in 70 years, the researchers of the study said.
Katherine Ward reports.
