Queen Elizabeth II was lowered into a vault at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle in London on Monday, following a state funeral that was attended by hundreds and watched by millions, as the world bid farewell to a monarch who has sat on the British throne for 70 years.
The committal service at the chapel was one of the final moments of a day that was filled with unimaginable pageantry to honour the queen. The coffin was draped with the Royal Standard and the Imperial State Crown sat atop it, with almost 3,000 diamonds sparkling, as well as the sovereign's orb and sceptre. The three items were eventually removed and placed on the altar, to represent separating the queen from her crown for the final time.
"We have come together to commit into the hands of God the soul of his servant Queen Elizabeth, here in St. George's chapel where she so often worshipped, we are bound to call to mind someone whose uncomplicated yet profound Christian faith bore so much fruit," David Conner, dean of Windsor, said to those attending the committal service.
Her coffin was then lowered into the vault as Conner performed the commendation. The congregation then sang the national anthem, "God Save the King," as King Charles appeared to fight back tears.
The Royal Family will hold a private ceremony later Monday, where the queen and Prince Philip, her husband of more than seven decades, will be buried together in the same chapel where her parents and sister, Princess Margaret, also rest. Prince Philip died April 9, 2021.
