Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reacted to the news that Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96 on Thursday.

“It is with the deepest of sorrow that we learned today that we learned of the passing of her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the second. She was our Queen for almost half of Canada’s existence. And she had an obvious, deep, and abiding love and affection for Canadians. She served us all with strength and wisdom for 70 years as we grew into the diverse, optimistic, responsible, ambitious and extraordinary country we are today,” the prime minister said.

The Queen, 96, died on Thursday in her Scottish residence, Balmoral Castle, alongside several members of the Royal Family, The Royal Family made the announcement in a Twitter post at 1:30 p.m. EDT on Thursday. Her eldest son, Charles, has ascended to the throne under the title King Charles III.

"Canada is in mourning," said an emotional Trudeau.
