Speaking at a ceremony marking the sixth anniversary of the Quebec City mosque shooting on Sunday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau remembered the six Muslim men who were killed when a gunman opened fire inside the Quebec City Islamic cultural centre on Jan. 29, 2017, and all other Canadians who have been killed because of their Islamic faith.

Trudeau said Canadians must recommit to the values of “openness and respect” every day.

For the first time, the ceremony was held inside the mosque's prayer room, the very place where the rampage took place. The Quebec City victims were Mamadou Tanou Barry, Ibrahima Barry, Khaled Belkacemi, Abdelkrim Hassane, Azzeddine Soufiane and Aboubaker Thabti.

The gunman pleaded guilty and was originally sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 40 years, but saw that window reduced to 25 years after a 2022 Supreme Court ruling.
