Putin "has to take responsibility": Navalny spokesperson confirms death of Russian opposition leader

A spokesperson for Alexei Navalny, the fiercest critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has confirmed the death of Russia’s opposition leader following reports from prison officials on Friday.

In a video released this morning, Kira Yarmysh revealed Navalny— who was serving a three-decade prison sentence — had died on Friday afternoon after losing consciousness during a walk, citing an official notice given to his mother.

Since reports emerged of the 47-year-old’s death, world leaders and followers of Navalny have accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of being behind the mysterious passing. In her statement, Yarmysh said that Putin “has to take responsibility” for it.

Navalny’s death has triggered memorials across not just Russia, but the entire world. Roughly 175 mourners were detained by police in dozens of Russian cities on Friday after attending memorials and protesting the death.

Despite police action, memorials continue to pop up as hundreds of flowers and candles are laid beside pictures of the prominent political figure. Supporters say Navalny's death will not be forgotten, and he was someone who gave them hope amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
