Pope prays for, urges “peace in Israel and Palestine” amid war triggered by Hamas offensive

During his weekly Sunday address in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City, Pope Francis urged Israel and Palestine to end their war that was triggered by an attack on Israel by Hamas militants on Oct. 7.

“Let the attacks and weapons cease, please, because it must be understood that terrorism and war bring no solutions, but only to the death and suffering of many innocent lives," the Pope said.

The multi-pronged offensive by Palestinian gunmen on Saturday left hundreds dead, with even more injured.

After the initial attack, Israeli Prime Minister Bejamin Netanyahu promised “mighty vengeance” against Hamas, shelling Gaza consistently since Saturday morning.
