Pope Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Wednesday to undergo abdominal surgery to treat a “painful” and recurrent” intestinal blockage.
The Vatican said Francis would be put under general anesthesia for the procedure Wednesday afternoon and would be hospitalized at for several days.
Before being escorted to Gemelli Hospital, however, Francis conducted his weekly General Audience in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City. He also greeted and blessed members of the Spanish Civil Guard.
The operation comes two years after the 86-year-old had 33 centimetres of his colon removed due to a narrowing of his large intestine.
