Nine days after receiving abdominal surgery to repair a hernia and remove painful scarring, Pope Francis was discharged from Gemelli Hospital in Rome, Italy on Friday.

In the brief distance before he could reach the white Fiat 500, reporters thrust microphones practically at his face, and the pontiff seemed to bat them away, good-naturedly.

“Still alive,” the pope quipped when a reporter asked how he was.

The 86-year-old left the institute in a wheelchair, smiling and waving to well-wishers. On the pope’s health status, his surgeon, Dr. Sergio Alfieri, said he’s “better than before.”

Though he advised the pope not to work, Dr. Alfieri said he was already back at his duties. Francis will be a “strong pope,” the surgeon concluded.
