Pope Francis acknowledged the “sexual abuse of minors and vulnerable people” by members of the Catholic Church during an evening prayer session on Thursday with Catholic cardinals, bishops and other members of the clergy. It is the first time he has done so during his visit to Canada on what he has called his trip of “penance.”

“I would like, together with you, once more, to ask forgiveness of all the victims,” he said.

During the service at the Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec, the Pope renewed his plea for forgiveness from Indigenous survivors of Canada’s residential schools and for the church’s role in a system that tried to strip Indigenous Peoples of their language and culture.

“And thinking about the process of healing and reconciliation with our Indigenous brothers and sisters, never again can the Christian community allow itself to be infected by the idea that one culture is superior to others, that it is legitimate to employ ways of coercing others,” he said.
