Polish farmers blocked the border with Ukraine to protest “unfair competition” and opened railway cars, letting grain spill out.

The protest has angered Kyiv, which says the demonstrations hamper its war effort as the country continues its fight to repel a full-scale invasion by Russia.

Poland has been a staunch supporter of Kyiv but farmers’ protests have strained ties. Tuesday’s demonstrations, meanwhile, marked an escalation from previous demonstrations with disruptions and ports nationwide.
“Right now we need to reduce costs so it all comes together at the end of the season. Because we don’t know, for example, how much wheat prices will be after the harvest,” said one Polish farmer.

“Because if wheat or rapeseed or other grains come from Ukraine all the time, than after the harvest we might have a problem selling it anywhere.”
Ukrainian truck drivers staged their protest at the border on Tuesday in response to the blockades.
