Fighters from Russia's private Wagner mercenary force are being moved close to NATO's eastern flank to destabilize the military alliance, Poland's prime minister said on Thursday. The arrival of Wagner Group mercenaries in Belarus following a failed mutiny in Russia has increased the likelihood of hybrid attacks, Polish officials say.

"We have to be aware that the number of these provocations will increase," Mateusz Morawiecki said, after meeting Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda in eastern Poland. "This is what the operational activities on their side are about. In order to destabilize. In order to create unrest, chaos, uncertainty," he added.

Separately, Poland's defence minister accused hybrid attacks from Belarus on Polish territory of being co-ordinated in the Kremlin, after visiting areas close to the Belarusian border. Defence minister Mariusz Blaszczak said he expected such attacks to continue and the Polish military had to be ready to respond and repel them.

Poland and its allies say Belarus has been engaging in hybrid warfare with its neighbour since 2021, when they say Minsk engineered a migrant crisis that saw tens of thousands trying to cross into Poland. Belarus allowed Russian President Vladimir Putin to use its territory as a launch pad for the Ukraine invasion, but has not committed its own troops to the war. In response, Poland fortified the border and increased its military presence in the area.
