Gun salutes were fired in England near the Tower Bridge and other locations, and at Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, in honour of Queen Elizabeth II's 70 years on the throne. She has reigned since Feb. 6, 1952.
The salutes were held Monday because the Queen does not celebrate on the day of the anniversary, as it is also the day her father, King George VI, died.
Members of the Wellington Barracks in London practiced ahead of the salutes, checking their uniforms and tending to their horses before mounting them for the display.
Britain will be holding four days of national events in June to mark the month of her coronation in 1953.
