Canada's Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos and chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam announced Friday that Health Canada has approved Pfizer's bivalent vaccine targeting Omicron.

"The Moderna bivalent vaccine was authorized last month for people 18 years of age or older, and the Pfizer bivalent vaccine is authorized today for people twelve years of age and older," Duclos said. "NACI now recommends that people twelve years of age and older who are eligible to get a booster dose this fall, receive a bivalent vaccine," the health minister added.

The bivalent booster dose will target both the original strain of COVID-19 and the two dominant BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants of the Omicron strain.

Dr. Tam said case counts have increased in recent weeks which may be a sign of a "fall resurgence," she said.
