Soldiers were seen in the streets of Peru after the country's defence minister announced a nationwide state of emergency, after a week of fiery protests and road blockades.

The protests were sparked by the ousting of former President Pedro Castillo on Dec. 7 in an impeachment vote.

Prosecutors on Wednesday said they were seeking 18 months of pretrial detention for Castillo, who has been charged with rebellion and conspiracy

"Our president is kidnapped; he is not in prison. It is arrogance, and they want to lock up our president. He is kidnapped, we are outraged, the national insurgency in Peru," one supporter of Castillo said outside the prison where he is being held.
