When asked if road-widening in the area could have led to Joshimath's land subsidence, Purushottam Sharma of the Joshimath Bachao Andolan said, "The government over the past 12-13 days has been trying to sweep the issue under the rug. Over the years the government has carried out multiple studies on Joshimath. It is only when the people were forced to come out on the streets and protest that the government even admitted that there was a problem in Joshimath. The government asks us not to blame the NTPC plant or the PM's dream bypass project."
