Questions abound about what went wrong with the planned departure of United States forces from Afghanistan.
The top US defence chiefs have faced the press for the first time since the withdrawal, saying the war has not been fought in vain.
Despite the reassurances, European allies are now pondering the significance of the chaotic end to the US war in Afghanistan and the needed changes to world order it may impose.
