World Athletics has become the first international federation to award prize money at an Olympic Games. Each first-place podium at the 2024 Paris Olympics will be awarded US$50,000 or (around NZ$83,000).
Former Olympic rower and gold medallist, Mahé Drysdale from The Athletes' Co-operative told Breakfast it's "a very good step in the right direction". It tells athletes that "we are now valued, we're a big part of generating all this income and now we're going to share in it".
