Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh announced his resignation on Monday to foster a broad-based consensus among Palestinians on political arrangements in Gaza amid Israel's conflict with Hamas.

"This decision comes based on the political, security and economic developments that are related to the offensive on our people in Gaza, and the unprecedented escalation in the West Bank and Jerusalem, and to what our people and Palestinian cause are facing," Shtayyeh added, "and based on the genocide, forced displacement, and the starving of people in Gaza."

The United States has been increasing pressure on President Mahmoud Abbas to reorganize the Palestinian Authority.

However, Abbas must still accept his resignation, and he may be asked to stay on as caretaker until a permanent replacement is appointed.
