Patients were seen crowding outside a hospital run on generators in Pakistan's commercial capital Karachi on Monday after the country was hit by a nation-wide power cut due to a major breakdown in its national grid.
“I have to keep bringing my patient in and out of the building because the X-ray machines and other testing equipment are in different parts of the hospital. Things are becoming more complicated because of the power outage," said Mohammad Khurram, a resident who had brought his mother-in-law to the hospital.
The outage was caused by a large voltage surge in the south of the grid, which affected the entire network, according to the power ministry.
"This morning at 7:34 a.m., a large voltage swing in the north- south corridor of the country occurred unexpectedly, which resulted in disturbance in the voltage and frequency systems," Pakistan's Energy Minister Khurram Dastagir said. "This effected the frequency of the National Grid, and resulted in a huge power breakdown in the entire country. But thank God, the country's distribution system remain safe and there are no reports of damage or any loss."
Pakistan has enough installed power capacity to meet demand, but it lacks resources to run its oil-and-gas powered plants and the sector is so heavily in debt that it cannot afford to invest in infrastructure and power lines.
