Despite making climate pledges, the federal government approved the Bay du Nord oil project off Newfoundland and Labrador's coast in April.

The Bay du Nord project is in the Flemish Pass, which is about 500 kilometres east of St. John's. The developer, Equinor, says it will cost $16 billion to develop, which will produce an estimated 500 million barrels over several decades.

As Ross Lord explains, the decision is spawning questions about whether the federal and provincial Liberal governments are moving in opposite directions on the environment.
