Small and nestled in a spot about an hour's drive west of Toronto, Crawford Lake has been selected by a panel of scientists to represent a new chapter in Earth's history.

The lake has been dubbed as the “golden spike,” marking the start of the Anthropocene epoch, with its existence having been debated among geologists for more than a decade.

Global's Jeff Semple explains what the small body of water reveals about how much humans have profoundly altered the planet and why it matters.
