There are new concerns about "upselling" and user fees at private surgical clinics in Ontario as the province expands the role of those facilities in an effort to cut down on the surgical backlog.

It's a little-known fact in Ontario's health-care system that patients at private clinics are sometimes forced to pay out of pocket. As new legislation is set to allow for knee and hip surgeries to be performed outside of a hospital, Premier Doug Ford said on Monday that it would be paid for by a person's OHIP card, not their credit card.

But as Global News' Queen's Park Bureau Chief Colin D'Mello reports, advocates are questioning if the government is doing enough to target "upselling," which some claim have clinics attaching "unneeded things" to needed surgeries.
