NAB gets power to detain accused for 30 days under new amendment

* NAB ordinance promulgated around midnight.
* Accused can be detained up to 30 days.
* PTI chief, wife summoned by antigraft body.


The government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif further amended the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) laws, allowing the antigraft watchdog to detain accused for 30 days.

Acting President Sadiq Sanjrani signed the NAB (Amendment) Ordinance 2023 in the dead of night after the federal cabinet's approval.

According to the ordinance, the NAB chairman can issue arrest warrants for the accused for non-cooperation during investigations.


Supreme Court rejects plea to stay probe against PTI chief in lawyer murder case

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a plea seeking to stop the prosecution from taking any action against the PTI chairman in the murder of a known lawyer in Quetta.

As the defence objected to nominating their client in the murder case, they had requested the court to issue a stay order. However, a two-member bench comprising Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Ayesha Malik also didn’t accept the application against the non-bailable warrants issued for the accused.

The bench observed that a two-member high court bench had dismissed the plea; therefore, the two-member Supreme Court bench couldn’t grant stay.


Pakistan, IMF reach $3bn staff-level agreement.
