U.S. EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan promised East Palestine, Ohio residents on Thursday that the railway company involved in a Feb. 3 train derailment with toxic chemicals will be held “accountable,” following a site visit of the impacted areas.
“We are going to get through this as a team. And at the same time, we are absolutely going to hold Norfolk Southern accountable — and I can promise you that,” Regan said.
U.S. EPA Region 5 Administrator Debra Shore, Sen. Sherrod Brown, Ohio Rep. Bill Johnson as well as other officials working on response efforts in attendance also supported Regan’s call for accountability and called the incident “a disaster.”
Approximately 50 Norfolk Southern Railroad freight train cars, some carrying toxic vinyl chloride and other hazardous chemicals, went off the tracks in Columbiana County on the evening of Feb. 3. Residents in and around East Palestine, a small town of about 5,000, were ordered to evacuate.
