Norfolk Southern Chief Executive Officer Alan Shaw testified before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee about the Feb. 3 train derailment in eastern Ohio on Thursday.

Shaw apologized to Congress and is pledging millions of dollars to help East Palestine, Ohio, recover from the fiery hazardous materials train derailment as senators investigate rail safety and the Biden administration’s response to the disaster.

Shaw says the railroad will do “the right thing” with a $20 million commitment to help the community recover. He also said while he's only been on the job for 10 months as CEO, this incident does not represent the company.

Senators, in a bi-partisan effort, asked about the cause and impact of the Norfolk Southern train derailment and chemical spill in East Palestine as they open the first congressional hearing.
