During a news conference on Monday about the powerful winter storm that swept through New York state, Gov. Kathy Hochul expressed her condolences and highlighted the urgency of the situation as the total death toll from snow-related fatalities rose to 25. The deadly winter blizzard – deemed the area’s worst in 45 years – walloped much of the U.S. and continues into this week.

“The families who are getting horrible, heartbreaking news that their loved ones succumbed to the storm over the last day or two; our hearts are breaking for them and we’ll be there to support their families and get them through this,” Hochul said. “The people who are the ones who find their loved ones; it does take a toll… None of them thought that this was what they were going to be doing on their Christmas holiday.”

“Historic storms are no longer historic to us. That’s become a way of life in our state and that’s a result of climate change, as we see extreme weather events all over our country,” Hochul also warned, “All of us, in state and county-level government, know we have to prepare for the next big one.”

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz and Mayor Byron Brown, who were also in attendance, condemned the reports of looting that have taken place amid the snowstorm chaos and warned residents to avoid travelling outdoors if possible. Officials said another foot of snow could fall in Erie County through early Tuesday afternoon.
