World tennis No. 1 Novak Djokovic was released from Australian immigration detention on Monday after winning a court challenge to remain in the country, but the government said it was still considering another move to deport him.
Judge Anthony Kelly ruled the federal government's decision last week to revoke the Serbian tennis star's visa amid a row over his medical exemption from COVID-19 vaccination requirements was "unreasonable," and ordered his release.
Fans of Djokovic erupted into singing and dancing in front of the courthouse in Melbourne as the judgement was read out Monday.
In Serbia's capital Belgrade, people welcomed the court victory for their compatriot, affectionately referred to as Nole, while the family of Djokovic told reporters they stood behind him and would be ready to fight for him "in every possible manner.”
Back in Melbourne, there were chaotic scenes as supporters gathered around a vehicle they thought was carrying the tennis player, chanting "Free Novak!"
Police at one stage used pepper spray as they tried to clear a path.
