Northland is facing ‘an economic Covid without the masks’ | John Campbell’s Budget Roadie

Kane Lyden has worked at the Mid North Budgeting Service Trust in Kaikohe for over twenty years. She sat down with John and told him the cost of living crisis that’s been hitting her community hard for three years is the worst she’s ever seen.

‘How often do you see people who struggle?’ asked John.

‘Every day,’ she replied. ‘Every day.’

Northland, stunning yet struggling, consistently tops New Zealand’s deprivation index by nearly every measure. In the lead-up to Budget Day 2024, John Campbell and his camera operator Clint Bruce travelled to the North to uncover the challenges faced by locals such as Kane, and to explore how the Budget might impact their lives.
