The European Parliament held a special session to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.
That was the 1998 deal that enabled the peace process in Northern Ireland to start, after 30 years of conflict costing more than 3,000 lives.
The approach to the anniversary has been marked by an increase in tensions.
British authorities have raised the terrorist threat level in Northern Ireland to 'severe' - meaning security forces expect an attack imminently. European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen praised the progress made in Northern Ireland since the Good Friday Agreement was signed - but recognised that not all wounds have been healed.
