King Charles III said on Tuesday that he would seek the welfare of the people of Northern Ireland, taking up the example of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.

He made the comments at Hillsborough Castle, the official residence of the monarch, where he and Camilla received a message of condolence on behalf of the people of Northern Ireland.

The King's visit drew a rare moment of unity from politicians in a region with a contested British and Irish identity that is deeply divided over the monarchy.

After the condolence gathering, Charles met senior politicians from the province, including the leader of the Sinn Fein party in Northern Ireland, Michelle O'Neill.
