The families of those killed when a gunman opened fire at a Majory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, Fl. in 2018 spoke directly to the man convicted in their loved ones’ deaths on Tuesday.

In victim impact statements delivered during at the sentencing hearing for Nikolas Cruz, the families shared with the court their heartbreak and frustrations after a 12-panel juror recommended life in prison without the possibility of parole.

“The first major event of my adult life was when I was 19, when my sister was shot to death and now my early twenties are ending with being told that no justice will be done in her memory. That she died but it doesn’t matter because his life wasn’t cupcakes, rainbows and sunshine,” said Meghan Petty, sister of Alaina Petty, expressing frustration that Cruz wouldn’t be sentenced to death.

Seventeen people were killed and 17 others were injured when Cruz opened fire inside the Florida high school on Valentine’s day in 2018. He is expected to be sentenced on Wednesday.
