In a surprise twist, attorneys for the Florida school gunman Nikolas Cruz suddenly rested their case on Wednesday in the ongoing Parkland shooting trial, leading to a few tense moments between the judge and the defence team. According to reports, only a fraction of their expected witnesses had been called and the declaration was made without prior warning to the judge or prosecutor.
The sudden announcement by Cruz’s lead attorney, Melisa McNeill, led to a heated exchange with Broward County Circuit judge Elizabeth Scherer, who said the decision was “the most uncalled for, unprofessional way to try a case.”
The 12-member jury and 10 alternates were lining up outside the courtroom, but the sudden announcement meant prosecutors were not ready to start their rebuttal. When Scherer asked if the lead prosecutor Mike Satz could begin, he threw his hands up and said “no.”
“To have 22 people march into court and be waiting as if it is some kind of game. I have never experienced such a level of unprofessionalism in my career,” Scherer said, raising her voice. “You’ve been insulting me the entire trial, blatantly. Arguing with me, storming out, coming late intentionally if you don’t like my rulings. So, quite frankly, this has been long overdue.”
