Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced on Wednesday she would resign after nine years ruling the Scottish National Party following the failed independence referendum of 2014.

Sturgeon said her resignation came from a "place of duty and a place of love," but she said her dominance over her party and her country was no longer the asset it once was, especially as the party hopes to seek independence from the United Kingdom once more. She said a new leader is needed who can reach across the aisle.

"Someone about whom the mind of almost everyone in the country is not already made up for better or worse, someone who is not subject to quite the same polarized opinions fair or unfair as I now am," Sturgeon said.

It is not known at this time who might succeed Sturgeon, even as the country faces unresolved issues with independence.
