Nicola Sturgeon has announced she is resigning as Scotland's first minister after more than eight years in the role.
Ms Sturgeon said she had been “wrestling” with the decision for some weeks, but that she knew "in my head and in my heart" it was the right time to step down.
She made the announcement at a hastily-arranged news conference at her official residence in Edinburgh, UK.
Ms Sturgeon is Scotland's longest-serving first minister and the first woman to hold the position.
She confirmed she will remain in office until the Scottish National Party, which she leads, elect her successor.
