There can be no free and fair election in Nicaragua later this year if suppression of the opposition continues, according to Human Rights Watch.
The human rights advocacy organisation said the arrests of five possible presidential candidates, as well as rights violations against government critics, are a strategy to eliminate the competition.
The group is urging the UN to put pressure on President Daniel Ortega to stop the alleged abuses.
