Residents and visitors of New York state are still talking about a rare 4.8 magnitude earthquake that hit parts of New Jersey and New York City on Friday.

While the tremors shook residences and businesses, taking locals by complete surprise, it left very little damage. Some even mistook the rumblings for underground subway trains.

"We were in our hotel room, and we felt this rumbling on the floor, and it felt like there was a subway going under us," said David De Mond, who was visiting New York City. “We left and we came down to Bryant Park and then we got the emergency alert. So our question is, why was it an hour later?" the California native joked.

"I felt really strange because it was my first time experiencing that," said New York City resident Alex Carchi. "I was actually at the office. I was really scared and that's why I'm going home now. Just hope everybody's safe,” he added.

Friday's earthquake was the largest felt in the city since the 2011 5.8-magnitude earthquake in Virginia that prompted evacuations of City Hall and other buildings and caused damage in Washington.
