The earthquakes in Turkey and Syria have left a staggering trail of destruction - with houses and buildings reduced to rubble.

Authorities in Turkey have started to carry out building inspections after the series of earthquakes that have killed tens of thousands of people. Many buildings which are still standing are structurally damaged. Those left homeless have little choice but to sleep in cars or tents.

For others, the earthquakes are yet another cruel twist of fate. Mazhar Malla Hasan fled to Turkey to escape the civil war in Syria. He settled in the city of Antakya near the border to his home country where he felt safe from the violence that has plagued Syria for more than a decade. But now, Mazhar's place of refuge has also become a place of personal tragedy.
