French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday defended his decision to call a snap election after his party’s crushing defeat in the European Parliamentary vote, adding that he would not resign if his camp does not win.

“I want to nip that in the bud, (the chance of that happening) never existed,” he said. “It’s absurd. I believe in the strengths of our institutions.”

In what amounted to a campaign speech, Macron acknowledged making mistakes and said people had expressed their indignation but felt they were not being heard.

Macron also defended his decision to suspend electoral reform in New Caledonia after the planned changes triggered deadly civil unrest, resulting in the deaths of at least nine people.
