A New Brunswick woman is calling for change in the province's health-care system, saying she almost died after spending more than 14 hours in a Moncton emergency room two weeks ago.

Bianca Gallant of Memramcook said she had called 911 after suffering from severe abdominal pain. On arrival at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre, she was triaged and had her vitals taken before settling in for what would be almost a 14-hour wait in the emergency room. At one point she said she couldn't breathe and told the triage nurse, but says she was told she would have to keep waiting. An ER doctor noticed she was in distressed and eventually got her an MRI, where it was determined she needed emergency surgery right away.

Gallant says while during a blood transfusion following her surgery, the surgeon told them she had been "minutes from death" and was "lucky to be alive." Suzanne Lapointe has the story.
