July 18 is Nelson Mandela International Day, an event coined by the United Nations in 2009 to honour South Africa's first democratically elected president and his fight for racial equality.
The activist invested much of his life to fight against Apartheid, what is defined as an institutionalized racial segregation structure that existed in South Africa and South West Africa from 1948 until the early 1990s.
Mandela was one of the first to encourage anti-Apartheid demonstrations and eventually was put in jail for encouraging the protests, which turned violent, and for gathering support from outside the country.
The first ever UN Mandela Day took place in 2010 and is held annually to recognize his legacy. Sharmeen Somani explains why Mandela's fight for racial equality is still relevant today.
