The NDP characterized the proposed Alberta Sovereignty within a United Canada Act, put forward by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith Tuesday, as a potential "threat to our healthcare system" during question period on Wednesday, saying the Act would do "nothing to actually deal with the problem."

"We have another serious threat to our healthcare system in the form of Danielle Smith's Sovereignty Act in Alberta," NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said.

The tabled legislation would, if approved, give the provincial cabinet wide-ranging powers that have already faced fierce opposition criticism and are raising some constitutional questions.

Singh said the Act could be used to "undermine Canadian laws, like the Canada Health Act, and make patients pay to access hospital services."

When asked what Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was doing to protect healthcare for Albertans, he said they would focus on standing up for Albertans, working with those who will work to "ensure that they're getting quality healthcare services."
