NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg spoke to reporters on Wednesday ahead of an "extraordinary" summit in Brussels Thursday amid the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

Stoltenberg told reporters at a news conference in Brussels on Wednesday that he expects the allies to sign off on the deployment of four new battle groups in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.

NATO leaders will discuss the bloc's defensive plan against Russia, and will announce further support to Ukraine including defensive equipment against a chemical or nuclear attack.

Stoltenberg warned of far-reaching consequences of any use of chemical weapons in Ukraine,

He also warned of the use of nuclear weapons, saying a "nuclear war cannot be won and should not be fought."

He called on Belarus to stop being "complicit" in the war on Ukraine and on China to show a firm response to Russia.

However, he said NATO is not part of the conflict and will not send any troops into Ukraine.
