President Joe Biden approved on Wednesday the deployment of nearly 3,000 troops to eastern Europe amid a standoff with Russia over Ukraine.

Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said the move was meant to signal its readiness to defend NATO allies.

Kirby said forces would be deployed to Poland, Romania and Germany.

Romania’s president and Poland’s defence minister welcomed the U.S. troops, with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis stating that eastern Europe is “going through an extremely tense period.”
