NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Monday, during a joint press conference with the foreign ministers of Sweden and Finland, that the military alliance would increase its presence in the Baltic region amid increasing tensions with Russia.

Stoltenberg added that for the first time in decades the U.S. has put an aircraft carrier and strike group under NATO command.

The NATO head said Denmark has committed to sending a frigate to the Baltic sea and is deploying F016 warplanes to Lithuania. Spain would send warships and potentially fighter jets to Bulgaria and France stands ready to send troops to Romania, he said.

He also said that NATO was considering sending troops to its southeast member states, but that a decision has not been made.
