The missile strike in Poland led to a last-second meeting between NATO countries, where the alliance's secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg confirmed it was likely not a "deliberate attack" from Russia and rather caused by a Ukrainian air defence missile.

The comments came as Polish President Andrzej Duda said the missile landing was likely a stray fired by Ukraine’s air defences.

After the meeting, U.S. President Joe Biden suggested the missile, which hit a Polish grain facility and killed two, didn't come from Russia, and there was cautious condemnation from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

News that it was likely not fired by Russia helped ease the pressure, but did not clear Moscow of blame, the NATO chief told reporters after an emergency meeting of NATO ambassadors.
